Surgical Technician Salaries And Other Other Details About This Job
The allied health profession includes surgical technicians. People employed as these technologists must be comfortable with surgical techniques, must always be supervised by a surgeon, and must make sure the the operating room is sterile at all times. The majority of these positions are filled by hospitals, however, other facilities can also require their services. Outpatient facilities, dentists, organ donation facilities, and veterinary clinics all require someone with these skills.
Education for the job involves one of two choices. One can get either a diploma or certificate. Diploma candidates will take classes for just over a year; certificate candidates need two years. Both include hands-on and academic work. Math, writing and science skills, along with courses like anatomy and medical terms are required. Specialization in a particular area is available, but it may take longer to complete the work. Certificates have a four year renewal policy.
Salaries are quite competitive. Of course, one must start at the entry level, but the salary can go up significantly with experience. Location has an effect on salary too. If working in a small hospital there will be fewer procedures than in a larger hospital. More procedures means more money. The salary range starts in the middle twenty-thousand dollar area and can go up to the higher forty-thousand or fifty-thousand dollar area. The mean pay scale is in the lower forty-thousand dollar range. Certified personnel receive higher wages and are often hired first over diploma personnel.
With the high pay comes more responsibilities. Sterilization of the entire operating room is essential to avoid infections or other complications for the patient. Before surgery even begins, you have the responsibility of preparing the patient for the procedure. You also sterilize all surgical tools and during surgery hand them to the doctor. You will be required to suture incisions and then bandage properly. Knowing basic surgical procedures and also the use of any surgical machines is usually also your responsibility.
The employment rate for this job is phenomenal. There is a much greater demand for these services than there are technicians to provide them. The employment rate and need for more in this profession is more than any other work category. This is good news for the technologists because any time there is more demand than supply, salary rates go up.
Surgical technician salaries are quite good now and will be even better in the future. If a person is debating about a course of study to take, this might well be worth looking into.
