Your New Gastric Banding

Gastric banding involves the placement of a silicone band at the top of the stomach, creating a small 15ml volume pouch.

The physical restriction of the stomach increases the feeling of fullness and therefore reduces the desire to eat. In laparoscopic gastric banding (keyhole surgery), about five small cuts (1 to 2cm long) are made on your abdomen and chest.

Your surgeon will insert a tube-like telescopic camera to view the area either by looking directly through this, or at pictures it sends to a video screen. As with all surgery, there are risks involved in gastric banding. However, the risks of remaining obese are higher than the risks of surgery.

I'm certainly no expert, but I would hazard a guess that gastric banding was only a small part of what helped Fern to lose the weight she lost. There can be no substitute for good diet & exercise. To achieve the maximum benefits from having the gastric banding, post-operative discipline is an important part of the process.

Adjustable Gastric Banding or 'Lap-Banding' as it is commonly known, is probably the simplest and safest of all the weight loss surgery techniques performed worldwide. This procedure is minimally invasive and more straightforward to perform and has a quicker rate of recovery compared to most other types of weight loss surgery.

When compared with non-surgical management, gastric bypass had a net cost per QALY of 6289 while vertical banded gastroplasty and silicone adjustable gastric banding had a net cost per QALY of 10,237 and 8527, respectively. Comparison of the different procedures suggests that the difference in cost per QALY is less clear.

After 5 to 7 years, patients who either had (n=40) or had not (n=42) received gastric banding were reassessed. Gastric banding is only available on the NHS if you meet specific criteria as set out by your Local Health Board (LHB), which are listed below.

The preoperative investigations for gastric banding surgery may include a gastroscopy. Gastroscopy is a procedure which enables the endoscopist to see inside your gullet, stomach and small intestine using a thin flexible tube with its own lens and light source.

This operation matches the advantages of the gastric banding (efficacy, reversibility and low invasivity) with the advantages of the laparoscopic procedure (low surgical risk, short hospital stay and less complications in the short and long term).

The maximum follow-up is 6 months and so far the weight loss results are the same as we obtained by the vertical banded gastroplasty of Mason. The adjustable gastric banding system works by helping you control your food intake and supporting long term, sustainable weight loss.

Travelling abroad for Laparoscopic Gastric Banding can give you access to top quality health care quickly and cheaply. Our mission is to make your journey absolutely successful - in terms of treatment, in terms of outcomes and in terms of experience. It has grown and includes a large number of people who have undergone gastric banding.

It is an important source of information and reaches a large number of individuals considering or having undergone obesity surgery. This is a restrictive procedure like gastric banding without using any foreign body. The stomach is divided using staples along the inside leaving a narrow banana shaped stomach tube.

Conclusions: Gastric banding can be performed safely with the Lapband or the SAGB with similar short- and midterm results with respect to weight loss and morbidity. Only 50% to 60% of the patients will achieve sufficient weight loss, and close to 10% at least will develop severe long-term complications.

Once the gastric banding is in situ around the the stomach the gastric banding creates a small pouch at the upper end of the stomach which is designed to hold approximately 50mls of content. This pouch normally 'fills' with food quickly as the patient eats and thereby restricts further passage of food from the top to the bottom area of the patients stomach.

Underwent gastric banding and was told that even with her medical condition, this was the safest possible option with very little risk. She underwent the surgery.

An average 50% excess weight loss can be expected by patients within 18 months of undergoing the pioneering gastric banding surgery. Gastric Banding is only recommended for people who are classed as clinically obese with a BMI over 40, and suffer with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Once weight is lost the evidence is that these conditions improve.
